Although clowns are originally comic performers and characterized to be humorous and entertain people, the image of the evil creepy clown has become popular culture. With the use of scary make-up and dark humor, the kiddies favorite birthday party entertainer can turn sinister real quick. PENNYWISE- IT
One of the most iconic clowns in history, adapted from the Stephen King novel into a two-part TV movie directed by Tommy Lee Wallace. Tim Curry’s performance as Pennywise has scarred a number of children and adults alike and left an impact on the perception of clowns for many.
There is something strangely twisted about an all-powerful demon who can change into any horrific form it likes but chooses to imitate a children’s entertainer. Very clever.
IT is worth a watch, even if just to say you’ve seen IT, but personally I loved IT and still do. Puns intended.
CAPTAIN SPAULDING- The House of 1000 corpses & The Devils Rejects
Captain Spaulding manages to be both over the top and genuinely quite frightening at the same time with ease. The vulgar clown and patriarch of the Firefly family, Sid Haig, was born to play this role, and I don’t think anyone could play the part of Spaulding as well as he does.
In both films he is a crusty looking old man in a filthy clown suit and smeared make-up with the words “LOVE” and “HATE” tattooed on his knuckles. Though in The Devils Rejects he only has his clown face on during the first half of the film.
He is a thoroughly disgusting man whose teeth are so bad that at times they’re slightly more frightening than his clown costume.
Loved and hated, Captain Spaulding is one clown you might actually want to have come to your birthday party, but ensure that the invite is for one only.
THE JOKER- The Batman Franchise
The Joker is the infamous wicked character from the Batman stories. He may not be scary to some, but the most sinister portrayal of him was done by the late Heath Ledger, who managed to bring a much more believable evil to the screen.
Throughout his original comic book appearances, the Joker was portrayed as a master criminal whose characterization varied from that of a violent psychopath, to a goofy trickster-thief.
His appearance is not typical of many clowns, known for his purple three-piece suit and insidious smile, but he shares enough sufficient traits with them and is also known as “The Clown Prince of Crime” that we just had to include him here.

A face to really mess with a coulrophobics head, Art the clown, has a make-up that nightmares are made from.
In his debut this menacing character is unleashed upon an unsuspecting babysitter who finds an old VHS tape displaying three tales of terror you would not want to find yourself involved in.
A grimacing, freaky faced Art just wants viewers to “come out and play.”
Do not go out. And do not play.
POGO- From the film based on a true story; Gacy
Pogo the clown has to be one of, if not the scariest clown in history ever. Because he’s real.
John Wayne Gacy dressed up and went under the name Pogo to be able to easily make connections with young men so he could kidnap, rape, torture, and murder them.
Gacy taught himself how to apply clown makeup and made all his own costumes, performing countless times at local children’s parties and hospitals.
John Wayne Gacy AKA Pogo epitomizes the concept of the “evil clown”.
