Let’s start out with what Open Grave is. Open Grave is a movie you should definitely see and a movie that both non-horror and horror fans alike can enjoy. It’s a mix of mystery, horror and thriller, in no particular order. Open Grave starts out with a “Man wakes up in a bad situation with no memory” plotline. This has been done before, but it works well, both within the film and for the viewer as you discover what the movie’s about.
What is Open Grave not? It’s not a film you want to know any details about the story before viewing beyond a few sentences. Trust me on this. If I were to tell you more, the film would go from an a very good film to an average film. Going in not knowing what it is about is half the fun.
Our lead character, played by always strong District 9’s lead Sharlto Copley, wakes up in a large pit surrounded by dead bodies, having no memory of who he is or how he got there. A rope is thrown down into the pit by a mysterious mute woman who rescues him. He is lead through a dark and stormy forest to a house where several other people have gathered who also don’t have any memory of who they are or why they are there.
Is he the killer? Is one of the other people the killer? Just what is going on exactly?
And that is where I will leave you. Suffice to say, what is actually happening is slowly, and mysteriously, revealed. Saying anything more will most definitely spoil the film.
The film is shot well, the acting varies from good to excellent and the score adds another layer of creepiness. Just like the stranded on an island TV series Lost, this film will seem long if you know what it is about and on the flip side, you will wish you had more of it if you don’t know what it is about.
