I love a good revenge horror movie and I Spit On Your Grave had me hooked from start to finish.
Now I’m talking of the remake Directed by Steven R. Monroe, I watched the original version by Meir Zarchi and while I appreciate the uproar it caused when it came out, I feel its inept compared to the remake. I found myself laughing at points from the 1978 version, and unless it’s a horror/comedy, I shouldn’t be laughing. Especially with the topic this movie is based around. The 2010 remake however didn’t make me laugh.
I spit on your grave teases the impending nightmare you know is going to happen and the brutality itself is not easy to watch, nor should it be, it’s prolonged and displayed in graphic, unflinching detail. Sarah Butler who plays Jennifer Hills is absolutely brilliant and you really want these guys to get what they deserve having seen what she goes through. Boy do they!
The revenge in I spit on your grave is really the main reason to see this, it’s creative and unique and I was smiling by the end of the film just for the justice that is dished out. In fact, the Unrated version we are reviewing was sent to the MPAA to see if it could possibly get an R rating. The MPAA saw the film and said, according to the director Steven R. Monroe, that it definitely was “an NC-17 movie, but we don’t recommend that you cut it down because we feel like it’s really impactful.” Thus, it was released unrated to get into more theaters.
A few people have said there’s “no ending… or there’s no closure to the film” and I would have to disagree with that if you feel that way, what did you want to see after that? Miss Hills living her life happily ever after?
I spit on your grave doesn’t really need a hyped up score to work, because the story is selling (and telling) itself and such a surprisingly powerful and disturbing viewing that if you have the stomach for distressing material you should definitely give this film a go.
