Winona Ryder Updates on Beetlejuice 2

Winona Ryder in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice

As I have said before, things aren’t looking particularly promising for Beetlejuice 2. But the project is still not yet officially off the table. Actress Winona Ryder spoke with Collider about the possibility of a long-awaited sequel to the 1988 film. But she wasn’t exactly confident that anything is happening anytime soon.

“I don’t really know what’s going on with that,” Ryder told the outlet. “Obviously, it was an iconic film. The only way it could really ever be done is with Tim [Burton] and Michael [Keaton]. I don’t know. There’s something that really resonates with all ages, with that film. It’s interesting. I think it would be great if it happened, if it was the right circumstances. Gosh, you know you’re getting older when they’re making TV shows, sequels or plays for things that you did. It’s very flattering and very humbling, indeed. I heard they were making another Little Women. Mine was the fifth one, so that’s kudos to Louisa May Alcott. It’s just very flattering.”

Last we heard, Tim Burton said that it was something that he would really like to do but only under the right circumstances. So, from the sound of it, everyone is game, it’s just a matter of getting everyone’s schedule cleared at the same time and getting the studio on board.

This is a follow up effort that has suffered through development hell for years and while it seemed as though things were finally coming together at one point, it looks like we may be waiting a while longer for this project to materialize. Last we heard, Seth Grahame-Smith  had been tapped to pen the script. As far as we know, his is the most recent draft of the screenplay but don’t hold your breath on the picture going into production any time soon.

The original film sees a pair of recently deceased ghosts trying to exorcise the new (living) inhabitants of their home by enlisting the services of a bio-exorcist.
