After months of rumors and speculation, the long-awaited Slender Man movie has finally been confirmed.
The flick is being developed by Screen Gems (Hostel, The Mothman Prophecies), from a script by David Birke (13 Sins) and is cautiously looking to start production in Fall of this year, for a slated 2017 release.
Slender Man is a hugely-popular internet meme, largely believed to be one of the first ever creepypastas, i.e. internet horror stories that are passed around to frighten readers, and often trick them into believing what they’re seeing is real. It originated on the infamous Something Awful forums.
Poster Eric Knudsen (AKA Victor Surge) showcased a photo he’d created of two kids standing with an unnaturally tall, thin man in a black suit directly behind them. According to Knudsen, the man abducted children and forced others to commit terrible acts.
The Slender Man myth was elaborated on by other SA members, leading to shorts, video games, and a multitude of pop culture references. The character has even drawn comparisons to The Gentleman on Buffy and The Silence on Doctor Who.
The movie adaptation has seemingly been in the pipeline forever, but this is the first, explicit confirmation we’ve got that it’s actually in development.
