Neill Blomkamp Backs Away from His Alien Sequel (Possibly Indefinitely)

As we previously reported, Neill Blomkamp’s Alien sequel was in a holding pattern pending the completion of the upcoming Prometheus sequel. But the director has just announced that he will be backing away from the project for the foreseeable future. You can see Blomkamp’s tweet explaining his decision below. News like this is rarely good and even more rarely is it ever followed by an announcement that the project is back on. But we can always hope.

From the sound of it, he’s not entirely pleased that the studio is putting his project on the back burner in favor of focusing on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus sequel. However, it’s a bit of a surprise to see Blomkamp taking to Twitter to break the news. Earlier reports alluded to Ridley Scott insisting that Prometheus 2 be made first but all signs pointed to Alien 5 still being in the works. Now, it will be anybody’s guess as to if the director will pick up the project again after Prometheus 2 is completed.

It was previously expected that the film would see a 2017 release but now, it may not even get made with its biggest champion off the project, at least for the time being.
