Mike Flanagan Calls Ouija 2 ‘It’s Own Thing’, Hints at Possibility of Third Film

Ouija 2

Director Mike Flanagan recently sat down to chat with Bloody Disgusting about his excellent home invasion film Hush, which is now streaming on Netflix. When the conversation turned to Ouija 2 (which he directed for Blumhouse, Platinum Dunes, and Hasbro) he assuaged some of of our skepticism and revealed that the sequel will actually be largely unrelated to the first installment. He also let on that a third film may be a possibility and that the series could actually work as an anthology.

“It’s a lot of fun, and it’s not the movie people expect,” the director told the outlet, regarding his follow up to the 2014, supernatural horror film. “I know there’s some skepticism about it, and I think that’s appropriate – I was skeptical too. But I got to do something really cool and I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised.

“It’s a whole new thing,” he continued, and went on to jokingly say, “I actually can’t talk about that. But a Ouija board does factor into it.”

The outlet went on to ask if there is a possibility of a third film, if he would be on board to helm, and how it would tie into the franchise at large.

“I imagine they might want one if this one goes well, but I feel like I’ve told my Ouija story,”  Flanagan explained.

“It’d be kind of cool to see how the franchise does with new voices coming in for later installments. There’s just so many places you can go, narratively, with the board itself… it’s been around for 100 years, and the story possibilities are endless. It could be a real anthology franchise, with a different filmmaker helming each new entry. That could be lots of fun.”

Kate Siegel (Hush), Henry Thomas (Cloak and Dagger), LuLu Wilson (Deliver Us from Evil), Annalise Basso (Oculus), and Elizabeth Reaser (The Twilight Saga) will star in the follow up effort. Flanagan co-penned the script with Jeff Howard. .

Annalise Basso will appear as a young girl who has recently lost her father. Ouija 2 is set for an October 21, 2016 release . We will keep you apprised as we learn more about this developing project.

This first film was directed by Stiles White. It was released October 24, 2014 and made over $100 Million on a  $5 Million dollar budget.
