Mike Flanagan’s The Shining Sequel, Doctor Sleep Has Finished Filming

Doctor Sleep

As we first reported more than two years ago, a sequel to The Shining is in development. And we have some major news regarding the project to share with you, today. Director Mike Flanagan has revealed that he has finished principal photography on Doctor Sleep, which is slated for release January 24, 2020.

Flanagan shared the news with the following post on Facebook:

“So that’s a wrap on DOCTOR SLEEP! It’s been a long, crazy, truly unique experience. I read the novel as soon as it came out back in 2013, fascinated and moved by the epic story of Dan Torrance and Abra Stone, but I never imagined for a moment that I’d be the person to bring it to the big screen. It’s been an honor to spend the last five months with this fantastic cast and crew, and to be trusted with Stephen King’s extraordinary story. One of the highlights of my career, without a doubt.

“Shine on, everyone. Shine on.”

Oscar winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman wrote the first draft of the screenplay, which was later rewritten by Flanagan.

The adaptation will star Ewan McGregor as Danny Torrance. Appearing alongside McGregor will  be Rebecca Ferguson, Jacob Tremblay, Bruce Greenwood, and genre favorites Alex Essoe and Jocelin Donahue.

Doctor Sleep is, of course, a follow up to Stephen King’s The Shining. King served as an executive producer on the film, which is being developed at Warner Brothers. Stay tuned for more on this project as we learn it.

Stephen King’s novel, Doctor Sleep takes place several decades after the terrifying events depicted in the first book and follows a middle aged Dan Torrance as he continues to try to cope with the events that took place at The Overlook Hotel. Now having his own struggles with alcohol, Danny gets sober and relocates to a small New England town. Once there, he rediscovers his psychic abilities and meets a young girl who badly needs his help.
