David Lynch Departs Showtime’s Twin Peaks Revival

Twin Peaks

Following previous reports from David Lynch that there were complications with contract negotiations for the upcoming revival of Twin Peaks, we have now learned that Lynch has backed out of the project.

Twin Peaks Festival reported yesterday that Showtime had pulled the plug on the series but Lynch took to Facebook to refute that claim, saying, “Dear Facebook Friends, Showtime did not pull the plug on Twin Peaks. After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done. This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing. Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime. I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently.”

Showtime followed suit by releasing an official statement that reads, “We were saddened to read David Lynch’s statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points. Showtime also loves the world of Twin Peaks and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at its helm.”

Lynch and Mark Frost have reportedly turned in scripts for the planned third season of the program but if this departure proves to be permanent, it will likely be a very different series than what we’ve all been hoping for. It’s hard to imagine Twin Peaks without Lynch’s bizarre and wonderful oversight.

The nine episode limited series was expected to go into production this year and enjoy a limited run beginning in 2016. The premiere was expected to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the series original bow on ABC.

Twin Peaks followed the exploits of FBI agent Dale Cooper, who was sent to the logging town of Twin Peaks to investigate the murder of Laura Palmer. The show lasted for two seasons and developed a massive cult following. Since it was cancelled prior to the the storyline being completed, a movie, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me was released in 1992.
