Don Mancini: Cult Of Chucky Will Be “Chucky On Drugs”

Cult of Chucky - Chucky 7

It’s one of the most anticipated sequels, never mind horror movies, of the year and last we heard Cult Of Chucky was set to be the bloodiest installment in the series to date.

That was according to series creator Don Mancini who, a couple of months ago, told an excited crowd at Monsterpalooza that the flick is positioned to be Chucky’s goriest outing yet.

He also described it as “Chucky meets Inception” whatever that means.

Now we’ve got some more details about the plot as Mancini revealed, in a recent chat with CBC, that Cult Of Chucky will be set in a colder, wintry environment:

I wrote it with snow in mind. We shot all night outside for one sequence, and we got snowed out with a blizzard. We had to shut down for safety reasons. Our zoom lens also froze. But the snow was great — that really paid off. It gave the film a Shining-like feel.

Mancini also teased that this will be Chucky’s loopiest outing, with the film set at a mental institution (always an inspired location for a horror movie):

In Cult of Chucky, we’re doing a mental institution movie. There will be dream sequences and lots of surrealism. This will be Chucky on drugs

The writer-director reasoned that sequels that just do the same thing over and over are pointless, which is why he’s ensuring Cult Of Chucky will be considerably different to its predecessors:

To me, I don’t know why people would take the approach of doing the same things with a sequel. Sequels offer the opportunity to subvert expectations. All good storytelling is about good surprises. Sequels, by their very nature, bring baggage — how can I subvert them in a fun way?

The movie stars Fiona Dourif (son of Brad) as Nica once more, picking up where her story left off at the end of the surprisingly fantastic Curse Of Chucky.

Mancini revealed at Monsterpalooza that “Nica has taken the wrap for all of Chucky’s murders. She was sent to a mental institution, and after four years of shock therapy and drugs, doctors have convinced her that Chucky was just a delusion and that she had actually murdered her entire family.”

She’ll also reportedly be involved in a group therapy session with a Chucky doll, which can’t be good news for anyone involved.

Cameras began rolling several months ago in Winnipeg. The project is now in post-production. The film is expected to see a home video release in October via Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

The official synopsis for Cult of Chucky reads:

Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions — an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all. Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), Chucky’s now-grown-up nemesis from the original Child’s Play, races to Nica’s aid. But to save her he’ll have to get past Tiffany (Oscar®-nominee Jennifer Tilly), Chucky’s long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.” Grace Lynn Kung (Cube 2 and TV’s The Strain) also stars

Don Mancini is once again both writing and directing, with Brad Dourif returning as the voice of Chucky once more.
