We have a series of updates regarding the Conjuring cinematic universe to share with you. First off, via an interview with Cinema Blend, producer Peter Safran has announced that the third installment in the series will diversify from the first two films, in that it will not be a haunted house tale.

More specifically, Safran said: “There are some [cases] that maybe aren’t as well known, but [the Warrens] spent a fair bit of time researching and were part of [them]. Clearly we can’t do another haunted house movie, right? We can’t do another supernatural possession in a house, with a family in peril. Right? So, it’s got to be something different than that, I think.

James Wan had previously reported that the threequel would be set in the ’80s but no concrete details beyond that have emerged at this juncture.

In a separate conversation with Arrow in the Head, Safran also addressed the possibility of a spinoff featuring the Crooked Man from The Conjuring 2.

I think there’s something fascinating in the Crooked Man,” Safran said. “Maybe tonally he’s not as grounded as the Conjuring itself is and maybe that’s why some people felt it wasn’t what they were looking for in the Conjuring but I suspect a movie with him would be really really cool.”

The producer continued by saying, “I love the character, just things like the transformation from the dog into the Crooked Man and the way he walked. I just love what that character can be. We have some interesting ideas for him. So we’ll see

The Conjuring franchise has been a cash cow for Newline. Both Conjuring films and the first installment in the Annabelle series have done huge numbers. So, we fully expect to see more stories from that universe going into production.

Stay tuned to the site in the coming months for more on this project and the latest in horror news as we learn it.
