Following in the ghostly footsteps of Paranormal Activity, it was announced at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas that another burgeoning horror franchise may be looking to take the reigns and set up a film per year release schedule very shortly.
Paramount Pictures Vice Chairman Rob Moore introduced footage from the upcoming sequel to J-horror smash hit The Ring, entitled Rings (previously The Ring 3), at the convention this past weekend.
Reportedly, the trailer takes place on an airplane, with spooky Samara setting her sights on some poor, unsuspecting gentleman suspended thousands of feet in the air and unable to escape her clutches.
Aside from whetting our appetites with this brand-new footage, Moore also hinted that, should its slated October 28th release date prove successful, the studio may look at releasing sequels to the flick on an annual basis, around Halloween.
It’s an interesting prospect, which would ideally fill the void left by Paranormal Activity and, to a lesser extent, Saw (which seems like it’s going to go on forever no matter how many times it seems to be ending).
The 2002 remake of The Ring, and its 2005 sequel The Ring Two, are hugely popular movies, grossing a combined worldwide total of nearly $200 million, meaning there’s serious franchise potential.
If done right, this new release schedule could prove extremely profitable for Paramount. Whether it will benefit horror fans in the long run remains to be seen.
